Nailed is a full size adult coffin built out of resin and cigarette butts by Ray Frost, Johnny Simon, Megan McLeroy, Angie Terrell, and Cassandra Graham for Burning Man 2025.
The sculpture features a welded steel frame attached to a wooden base with resin panels attached to it. The resin is filled with recycled cigarette butts. The piece sustained some damage on playa and was repaired with gold colored resin to re-secure the panels and create a kintsugi effect. The lid is hinged and features a handle, so the lid can be opened. The lid is self-supporting with one corner touching the ground. For the interior, Frost hand tufted and hand felled a traditional Victorian style pauper's mattress with 100% cotton velvet over foam and recycled batting, using hand covered steel buttons.
The sculpture measures 24 inches high with the lid closed. It measures 79 inches long and 35 inches wide at the widest point. Mattress measures approx 3 in thick.
It has been displayed on playa at Burning Man 2025, at the 2025 Reno Tahoe International Art Show, and at Nevada Fine Arts for Frost's solo show "still moving." We are seeking a place to permanently install the piece. While the piece has survived extreme heat, rain, and snow, indoor or covered outdoor installation is recommended.
